6 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your HIIT Workout

Most people with a little background in human biology know that their heart is a muscle. But it’s not just a muscle, it’s the muscle. The one muscle you absolutely cannot live without.

Much like any other muscle in your body, to keep it strong and healthy you have to exercise it. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous cardiovascular activity per week.

AKA that dreaded 6-letter word “cardio” which conjures up thoughts of tiring and boring jogs on the treadmill.

We’ve got good news for you.

First, even though that might seem like a lot, when spread out over the course of a week like recommended, it comes to just over 20 minutes per day.

Second, you don’t have to go for a run to partake in cardiovascular exercise. In fact, according to professionals, moderate-intensity exercise is any activity that gets your “heart rate up to 50-60 percent higher than its rate when you are at rest.”

This means you could literally do any physical activity as long as you meet the increased heart rate threshold.

With that being said, we realize there are people out there who want to increase their cardiovascular endurance beyond minimum levels, but still hate the thought of jogging.

If that’s you, keep reading. We have even more good news for you.

You don’t have to run or get on the elliptical or the rower or the stair climber or even the stationary bike.

Yes, you read that right. You don’t have to do any one of those exercises. Instead you could keep things interesting and fun by participating in a HIIT workout.

In fact, research studies have shown that HIIT workouts are “equal to or slightly better than [traditional] cardio for improving overall health and fitness”.

So, what is HIIT?

HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training, is a workout regimen that combines several exercises such as mountain climbers, jump roping, burpees, lunges, planking and more into a short, 20-30 minute workout. Click here to check out this sample HIIT workout.

As the name suggests, these training programs are designed to be high intensity (80-90% of your maximum heart rate) and the exercises are to be completed in timed intervals with short breaks in between.

Keep reading to learn the 6 tips to make sure you experience the most success and cardiovascular benefits from your HIIT workout.

Baby Steps
If you are new to HIIT training, we recommend you ease into your workouts. Yes, it is supposed to be high intensity and you are supposed to push yourself, but you need to do it in a reasonable manner. Don’t go 110%. You do not want to hurt yourself.

Always Warm Up and Cool Down
Jumping immediately into a HIIT workout or stopping it immediately can be harmful for your body. You should warm up and cool down your body for 5 minutes before and after your HIIT workout. A good warm up/cool down could include a brisk walk on the treadmill and stretching session.

Don’t Overdo It
The whole point of a HIIT workout routine is to maximize exercise efficiency while minimizing workout time. As mentioned earlier, a good HIIT workout should be about 20-30 minutes in length. While going longer may help in the short term, you run the risk of an overuse injury. In addition, it is recommended that you only do a HIIT workout up to 3 times a week.

Go Hard or Go Home
Because HIIT is designed to be a short, high intensity workout, for the program to work you need to make sure you are staying consistently at 80-90% of your max heart rate. To find out what your max heart rate should be, click here.

Take a Break
A key term in HIIT is “interval”. To effectively do a HIIT workout you need to make sure you balance your high and low intensity intervals. If you don’t let your heart rate lower enough in your ‘rest’ period you will simply be doing a high intensity cardio session.

Invest in a SmartCells Training and Therapy Mat
SmartCells Training and Therapy products are specially designed to reduce impact stress on joints by up to 90% while at the same providing a safe, stable surface for HIIT workouts.

Available in three different colors (Black, Light Brown, and Grey) as well as three different sizes (36”X60”, 52”X60”, 52”X88”), the remarkable SmartCells Training and Therapy mats are low profile (1/2”) and have molded-in beveled edges to reduce tripping hazards. For custom applications, SATECH offers custom-sized mats as well as a wall-to-wall flooring option that is perfect for in-home gyms, and HIIT workout spaces.

How They Work
The unique SmartCells are spring-like, in that they provide a stable, supportive surface like a non-compressed spring, cushion as weight is applied, then rebound when the weight shifts, which returns energy and reduces fatigue and pain from your HIIT workout.

SmartCells: Solutions to Life’s Painful Problems.

The Fundamentals: Why Every Anti-Fatigue Solution Needs Balanced Cushion

“I received my [SmartCells] mats just before Christmas and immediately switched them out with my old thicker mat. At first I had high doubts these thin mats would be better than my thick, cushy mat…” – Stacy Tilton, stacytiltonreviews.com

It might surprise you that we hear this a lot. However, the skepticism quickly dissipates when people like Stacy stand on one of our mats. The review typically ends like this:

But boy was I wrong. They are honestly AMAZING. They don’t squish down under your feet like the thicker ones, but you can feel it when you stand on them.” – Stacy Tilton

You see, many people assume that if a hard surface is painful to stand on, then the softer the surface, the more comfortable it will be. This conclusion is further solidified with the marketing of many anti-fatigue products as being the thickest, softest, or most buoyant anti-fatigue mat on the market.

That’s why many anti-fatigue products available are made primarily using foam or gel. Both are soft to the touch and can be compressed easily which placates the illusion that softer is better. However, the illusion quickly fades when one stands on either mat for an extended amount of time.

The gel squishes out of the way, leaving the user standing on the hard surface they were trying to avoid. While mats made with foam tend to get harder as they compress. To combat this issue, many foam mats are thicker than their gel or rubber counterparts.

This causes a problem, in and of itself.

Not only does a thicker mat increase the risk of tripping, the imbalance created by such a thick mat actually makes the user more fatigued. Imagine standing on a memory foam mattress all day. Your muscles would have to work a lot harder to keep you balanced which would counteract the desired effects of the cushion.

Much like the critical feature of support, which we discussed in this article, for an anti-fatigue solution to be effective it must also have the optimal amount of cushion.

In fact, there is a way to scientifically quantify the hardness/softness of a mat known as the elastic modulus. Using megapascals, or Mpa, to measure resistance to pressure, research has determined that the optimal elastic modulus range for an anti-fatigue solution is between 0.6 to 0.9 Mpa.

So, what makes our anti-fatigue mats different from the others?

They are built utilizing our patented SmartCells Cushioning Technology, which is specifically engineered to meet the latest research standards regarding optimal cushioning levels.

The unique SmartCells compress and absorb pressure/impact energy from standing, weight-shifting, walking, or from the impact of a fall. After reaching a “critical threshold” the cellular structures soften and collapse laterally, without bottoming out.

Unlike foam, SmartCells® get softer as force is applied and remain in this cushioned “sweet spot” for as long as the pressure remains. This allows SmartCells anti-fatigue products to maintain a lower profile, effectively minimizing tripping hazards while maximizing standing comfort.

The Fundamentals: Why Every Anti-Fatigue Solution Needs Adequate Support

Most people do a little research before they make a significant purchase, and shopping for an anti-fatigue mat is no exception.

A cursory search of internet forums regarding what to look for in an anti-fatigue mat will conjure up articles upon articles discussing what that particular author deems critical features the ideal anti-fatigue mat should have.

While everyone’s “must have” feature lists differ, there is one characteristic that appears on almost every list:

“The mat must provide adequate support”.

Why is support so critical?

Afterall, a concrete floor arguably provides the most supportive standing surface available to man, but as we all know, it is painful to work on for two reasons:

  1. It is hard and unforgiving as a walking surface causing jolts throughout the body with every movement
  2. Because concrete is so supportive, when one stands on it in one place for too long, the muscles don’t move enough, reducing blood flow and causing pain.

Considering this, many people come to the conclusion that an ideal anti-fatigue solution needs to be on the softer end of the spectrum. This is why you’ll find many softer flooring alternatives such as  gel- or foam-based “anti-fatigue” mats on the market. However, too much softness or “cushion” is also bad.

Much like the goldilocks and the 3 bears story, the optimal level of support lies between too supportive and too soft. Flooring material in this range provides enough support to be safe and stable reducing workplace slips, trips and fall risks while also having the optimal level of instability to encourage small postural changes which facilitate increased blood flow to and from working muscles, effectively reducing standing fatigue.

So, what makes our anti-fatigue mats different from all the others?

They are built utilizing our patented SmartCells Cushioning Technology which is ergonomically engineered to provide optimal support.

The unique SmartCells have a “resting state” – much like a non-compressed spring – with a natural, supportive, upright force that provides a compressible, soft surface that is also stable and supportive.

7 Home Office Safety Tips to Stay Productive and Comfortable

Since their inception, computers have continuously revolutionized the way that we work. The technology has evolved from processing systems that take up entire rooms and have minimal power to the amazing computers in our pockets we have today (cell phones) and even cloud services.

Similarly, as technology has evolved, so has the workplace. Thanks to computers and cloud services, many companies are now offering remote positions with some even nixing a physical headquarters altogether. In fact, according to statistics, over the last 13 years there has been a 115% increase in telecommuting jobs.

Although this type of work environment provides many advantages to companies in the form of possible cost savings, the ability to hire individuals all around the globe, and flexibility for employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance, it does open up the company to possible safety and security risks.

Considering this, the week starting on the second Sunday in January was declared National Home Office Safety and Security Week (HOSS Week). During this week-long campaign, home office workers and businesses across the nation band together to raise awareness of the risks of remote work in an effort to make telecommuting a safer, more viable option in the future.

So, why is a cushioning technology company participating in HOSS week?

Not only does SATECH, Inc. personally employ several remote workers, our anti-fatigue mats and flooring solutions can be utilized to keep remote workers safe, comfortable, and productive in their home offices.

Keep reading to learn 7 ways to increase the safety, security, and comfort in your home office.

Get Organized
Being organized in your home office is a great way to ensure you remain productive and safe. Since you will likely have several pieces of electronic office equipment, we recommend untangling and organizing all of your cords and making sure you use the appropriate surge protector to reduce your risk of an electrical fire.

Lock it Up
While you may feel safe in your house, working from home has the ability to expose companies to security risks. Not only should your computer be password protected, if you have any physical documents you should utilize a locking file cabinet to ensure privacy is maintained. You may even consider a lock on your home office door if you have company on a frequent basis. Additionally, any sensitive or confidential files should be password protected and encrypted.

Don’t forget the Anti-Virus
While we are on the topic of security, make sure you stay up to date with your computer’s antivirus and firewall protection software. This will give you a much-needed extra layer of security.

Check with Your Insurance
Many remote workers assume that their homeowners or renters insurance will cover anything that happens in their residence. However, in regards to insurance, home offices can sometimes be a gray area. Make sure you check with your insurance agent to verify what is and isn’t  covered in your plan.

Back it Up
No matter how much caution you take to save your files, it only takes one technological hiccup or spilled cup of coffee to lose a file. Saving your important files to multiple locations can help safeguard you from this situation. We recommend backing up your hard drive physically and in the cloud in case something ever happens.

Keep it Clean
Keeping your home office space clean is important on many levels. Not only is a clean home office important for video meetings, it will help you stay more productive, and reduce your risk of injury due to a slip, trip or fall.

Invest in Your Comfort
Another great way to ensure you stay productive in your home office is to invest in ergonomically designed office equipment. Our remote workers find that a good chair, ergonomically placed monitors and keyboard, height-adjustable desk and SmartCells SlimLine anti-fatigue mat does the trick.

Featuring a lower profile, ⅜ inch height, and a stylish basket weave surface, the SmartCells SlimLine anti-fatigue mats utilize the same trusted cushioning technology as our industrial products but in a package that is thinner and lighter making it ideal for use as a standing desk mat.

Thanks to the optimized design of our unique SmartCells Cushioning Technology, which offers a stable surface over cylindrical cells that soften under impact and resist bottoming out, staying comfortable all day has never been easier.

SATECH’s Ultimate Holiday Baking Success Guide

The “Holiday Season” starts at different times depending on who you ask. Some will say it officially starts on Thanksgiving, while others may claim it starts when the leaves begin to fall. Here at SATECH, Inc. we tend to fall in the middle. Once Daylight Saving Time hits, we get into the holiday spirit.

Now don’t get us wrong. We give the turkey all the respect it deserves and hold off on Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. But we have been known to get our Christmas shopping done early and do some holiday baking. After all, isn’t holiday baking one of the best parts of the season?

Just typing this makes us hungry. Pumpkin pie, cinnamon rolls, holiday cookies, chex mix, the list of holiday baked goods goes on forever.

To help you get ready for a season of successful holiday baking we have compiled our 8 tips for Holiday Baking Success.

If you’re a veteran baker, keep reading for a refresher. If you’re a rookie baker, settle in and take some notes. After this article you will be well on your way to Holiday Baking Silver Star Status.

Ok, we made that up, but you will be on your way to wowing all your friends with your newfound baking skills.

Climate Control: Watch Your Temps
Everyone knows that most holiday goods bake at different temperatures, but did you know that the temperature in which you prep the baked good matters too? For example, to get a flaky pie crust, you need to ensure all your ingredients are super cold. Experts say you should even chill the mixing bowl. On the flip side, if you’re baking a cake, make sure all your ingredients are room temperature for best results.

One final note on temperature: When baking, keep the oven door closed. Frequently opening the door will make the temperature vary and affect the outcome.

Get Organized
Nothing is worse than getting half way through a recipe and realizing you’re missing an ingredient. Before you start mixing ingredients willy-nilly make sure you get organized. Start with making a list of the recipes you want to bake and the ingredients you need. Great, you have all the ingredients in your pantry. Before going any further make sure you have enough of each ingredient. Now you’re ready to bake.

Don’t Forget to Measure
Baking is essentially food science. You need to make sure you measure each ingredient properly in order to get the expected result. For wet ingredients, measure them in a glass or plastic measuring cup. When measuring dry ingredients, use a spoon to scoop the ingredient into the measuring cup then sweep a knife or straight edge across to the top to remove the excess.

Let it Dough
Chances are, one of the baked goods on your list to make is cookies. When making cookies the professionals recommend that you chill the dough in the fridge for 2-4 hours. This gives the ingredient flavors a chance to come together and enhance the overall taste.

Prep your Pans
Prepping your pans is just as important as making sure you measure the right amount of ingredients. Afterall, you don’t want your baked good to get stuck in the pan. So here’s what  professional baker Ann Burrell recommends:

  • If you want easy cleanup: Use parchment paper
  • Whether you’re using a nonstick pan or not, you should grease it with pan spray or butter
  • To remove cakes from pans easily, spray it with pan spray then add flour or parchment paper for easy cake removal

Drop That Knife
In my house, we subscribe to the “as long as it tastes good, it doesn’t matter if its ugly” mentality for baked goods. However, it’s always nice when a dessert looks as good as it tastes. For desserts like pies or cinnamon rolls, it is recommended that you refrain from cutting them with a knife if possible. Instead, use a length of unflavored dental floss. The floss allows nice, clean cuts and ensures a good presentation.

Write it Down
As you’re baking, take notes of any changes you make to recipes so that if you like it, you can use it in the future. It is also helpful to keep track of all your favorite recipes in case someone asks you for it. This article on Life Hacker (Click Here) has a great list of apps you can use to track your recipes.

Make it a Tradition
The holidays are all about spending time with the ones we love. Instead of simply baking alone, make it a tradition and bake with your loved ones. The memories made will be sweeter than the treats baked in the process, we can guarantee it.

Bonus Tip: Invest in a SmartCells SlimLine Mat
As we all know, standing on a hard floor in the kitchen can be painful and greatly diminishes the amount of fun you have baking.

Luckily for you, we just released a new kitchen anti-fatigue mat that makes standing in the kitchen a lot more enjoyable.

Featuring a lower profile, ⅜ inch height, and a stylish basket weave surface, the all-new SmartCells SlimLine mats utilize the same trusted cushioning technology as our industrial products but in a package that is lighter and tailored for residential and office use.

The SmartCells are spring-like, in that they cushion as weight is applied, then rebound when the weight shifts, which returns energy and reduces fatigue.

In addition to the unique cushioning technology, thanks to their rubber-based construction, SmartCells SlimLine mats will not absorb liquid and are easy to clean.

Should Your Company Really Be Worried About Good Ergonomics?

Ergonomics.

What do you think of when you hear that word?

Some may think it is just a buzzword created by HR and Marketing to describe and validate expensive workstation gadgets. However, chances are, since you subscribe to our newsletter, you know the meaning of the word “ergonomics” and why it is so important to company success.

Just in case you were wondering what the technical definition of “Ergonomics” is, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) defines it as “the systematic application of relevant information about human capabilities, limitations, characteristics, behavior and motivation to the design of machines, tools, procedures, and processes used by people and the environment in which they use them.”

That is a mouthful, and can still be confusing for an individual who is not in charge of ergonomics. Which is why HFES designated October “National Ergonomics Month” in 2003. This annual month-long campaign is geared towards raising awareness and promoting the importance of ergonomics to the general public.

We could number off several statistics for you as to why ergonomics is important. And we will. The bottom line is good ergonomics equals good business.

  • OSHA estimates that $1 of every $3 spent on workers’ compensation is due to ergonomics issues.
  • Work-related MSDs are one of the most reported causes of lost productivity in the workplace
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that ⅓ of all worker injury and illness cases are due to MSDs.
  • Direct costs of MSDs total $15-$20 billion annually

That is why SmartCells Cushioning Technology products are engineered using ergonomic technology, based on valid, time-tested research.

In fact, Dr. Martyn Shorten, a biomechanical engineer who hailed as the Head of Research at Nike and now owns his own Biomechanics company, tested SmartCells Cushioning Technology and validated our claims to being a truly ergonomic cushioning solution.

So when we say, “SmartCells anti-fatigue products are ergonomically engineered to provide optimal levels of comfort for standing workers”, we aren’t just capitalizing on a buzzword, we have the proof to back it up.

But don’t take our word for it, check out what these customers have to say about SmartCells Cushioning Technology.
