6 Strategies to Help You Stick to Your Fitness Resolutions

After the holiday season of eating, drinking, and being merry, many of us have set goals in the realms of exercise, diet and weight loss, to name a few.  Despite our best intentions, many of us abandon our resolutions before the year is through, and a third of us won’t even make it to the end of January!

What is it that stops us from attaining our goals and keeping our commitment to resolutions?  Several factors are at play and we have some great tips to help you navigate achieving your goals.

Relax. You don’t have to be a superhero to commit to being healthier this year and sticking to your resolutions. Whether your goal is to walk around the block or run a marathon–you can get there! Check out these strategies to help you stick to those resolutions in the coming year. We believe in you.

Write it and Measure it
Resolutions or goals of any kind should be both specific and measurable.  Writing down your goals can help you figure out what matters most and how you plan to achieve the task at hand. One way to do this is to follow the SMART model by keeping your goals specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time-bound. For example, if you want to go from couch-surfing to a 5k, you might start out something like this, “Over the next 8 weeks I want to run a 5k. I will plan to start by walking every other day for 20 minutes for the first week.” You can then build up to your bigger goals with smaller measurable steps. This helps you achieve your larger goals.

Make it Manageable
The key to reaching your goals is to make small consistent changes, gradually, over a period of time. If you have never run in your life and you want to go from the couch to running a 5k, you might need to start with something simple such as walking around the block each day.  Break it down and then gradually and steadily increase the activity level from walking to speed walking, then to jogging.

Find Your ‘Why’
A steady routine of exercise can result in six-pack abs or losing a few dress sizes before that next big event, but superficial goals can lose their appeal over time. Before starting your new routine ask yourself why you made this resolution and what you are hoping to achieve from it. Having a strong ‘why’ can help motivate you toward success with your goals.

Hold Yourself Accountable
Find an accountability partner and schedule your new activity with a friend. Knowing that someone is waiting for you to go jogging or to meet up at the gym can prevent you from skipping the activity altogether. Plus, it can be a lot more fun than going it alone.

Gear Up with Fun New Gear
Something as simple as buying new workout clothing or a new SmartCells Cushioning Technology performance mat can improve your confidence and help you keep going on your goals. We also have a line of insoles that cushion and support your every step, jump or run from the ground up.

Be Forgiving
Set-backs happen, and are even expected. There isn’t a single person out there who hasn’t stumbled in their path to reaching their goals. If you are prepared for slip-ups it won’t feel quite as tragic when things don’t go as planned. Be kind to yourself and remember to just keep going and don’t give up. We believe in you and we know you can do it.

SmartCells Cushioning Technology offers a suite of ergonomically engineered performance flooring, mats, and insoles that help you feel good every step of the way.

6 Tips to Reduce Holiday Stress

The holidays are known as the most wonderful time of the year for many, offering a chance to reconnect with friends and family, but they can also be stressful. Maybe you are worried about money because you feel pressure to buy and give gifts. Not to mention all the events, shopping, cooking and travel. There never seems to be enough time to get things done.

No matter how old or young you are, chances are you have experienced stress at one point in your life or another. In fact, according to statistics, 77% of Americans regularly experience stress-related symptoms. Furthermore, 1 in 5 Americans report suffering from “extreme stress” symptoms which include shaking, heart palpitations and depression.

Although stress can be caused by a variety of things, studies have found that it is often caused by work, money, health, relationships, media overload and fatigue. Fortunately, for every stressor, there is an equivalent reducer.

Don’t let those jingle bells get you down!  To help you find stress relief this holiday season, we have a list of six easy ways you can reduce stress in your life.

Just Breathe
Stress, especially extreme stress, can cause people to hyperventilate. Keeping control of your breathing and practicing exercises to slow it down and calm yourself can greatly help reduce stress. Experts suggest to breathe deeply by putting your hand on your stomach just below your navel. Then inhale slowly through your nose, hold it for a few seconds and then exhale slowly.

Meditate or Practice Yoga
Just like slowing down your breathing, meditation and yoga can help you calm and lower your stress and anxiety. Research shows that meditating just a few minutes each day can “alter the brain’s neural pathways and make you less susceptible to stress.” Meditating is easy, all you have to do is sit up straight with both feet on the floor, close your eyes and focus your attention on speaking positive thoughts.

Get a Massage or Take a Bath
This one is straight-forward, as stress can cause your body to tense up and create knots. A massage or bath is a good way to get some quiet, relaxing time while the stress melts away. Your body will thank you later.

Talk it Out
Having someone to talk through your day and vent to is extremely helpful. Whether it is a therapist or friend, you will find that voicing your stress and having someone give you some useful insight from a different perspective will help you manage your stress.

Watch What You Drink
Caffeine and alcohol can both negatively affect your stress levels. If you still need a boost in the morning, decaf coffee will help and won’t increase your heart rate as much as regular coffee.

Exercise
Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress. The endorphins released as you work out will help increase your happiness and fight your stress. Many like to think of sweat as stress leaving the body.

When I first began as a UPS driver my knees and legs would ache after I was done with my work day. My wife gave me a pair of SmartCells Insoles to try and I started using them July 1. The Washington State Fair – The place that brings people together, generation after generation

Did you know that over 1 million people visit the Washington State Fair each year? The founders of the Fair back in 1900 had no idea the tradition which had begun, nor could they have imagined the success it has become with over 1 million visitors each year!

The Washington State Fair, commonly referred to as the Puyallup Fair, is the largest single attraction held annually in the state of Washington. Ten decades ago, the Puyallup Valley community joined together in an effort to create a “Valley Fair”. The Fair provided a place to exhibit animals of all kinds, and it also became an area to show the show the crops which flourished in the valley’s rich land. Then, as well as now, people came from near and far to visit the Fair. The fair continually ranks in the top ten largest fairs in the United States. Starting in 2013, the fair was officially renamed the Washington State Fair. What started out in 1900 as a 3-day fair has grown into a 21-day event. This year, the Fair will be open September 2-25, and will be closed on Tuesdays.

From the beginning, three core values made up the Fair: Education, Family and Fun! These core values still ring true and will continue to provide a quality hands-on experience. The Fair is a place to escape the ordinary, be entertained, experience the joy of lasting memories, feel the excitement of discovery and enjoy the thrills, good food and great people. Join SmartCells Cushioning Technology and be part of this great Washington State tradition and come on down to the Fair!

At work, at play and at the fair–we, at SmartCells Cushioning Technology believe that life shouldn’t hurt. Can a Playground Help Your Elderly Loved One?

There’s just something about a playground. Whether it’s the swings, the heights or the feeling of freedom and accomplishment, playgrounds often hold a special place in our hearts.

The playground plays many different roles depending on your age. As a child, the playground serves as a place to play and meet friends. For parents, it serves as a place to take your child for physical activity in hopes that they sleep well at night. For elderly, not only does a playground provide a place to take grandchildren, but it is also a great place for them to increase their health. Yes, you read that right, playgrounds are good for the elderly.

In fact, playgrounds designed specifically for the elderly are becoming increasingly more popular around the world. According to an article on the website Upworthy.com, Spain was the first country to design playgrounds specifically for their aging population. The United States was quick to follow suit, and there are now over 50 playgrounds nationwide that were built with multiple generations in mind.

From increased health to the opportunity to get out of the house and socialize, senior playgrounds provide many benefits. Perhaps one of the best hidden advantages of senior playgrounds is that they provide seniors with a fun way to enhance their balance.

If you have been following our blog, you probably already know that falls and fall-related injuries pose many health risks for our elderly loved ones. The National Council on Aging reports that over 1/3 of senior citizens fall each year. These falls result in more than 2.5 million injuries and 21,700 deaths annually. While this number is large, with preventative measures and balance exercises it can be lowered.

If your elderly loved one’s city is not host to an elderly playground don’t worry. There are plenty of elderly balance exercises your loved one can do at home to lower their risk of experiencing a fall or fall-related injury. These exercises include:

  • Dancing
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • Leg Exercises
  • Chair Exercises

For added comfort, safety, balance and peace of mind, we also recommend using SmartCells Fall Protection mats or flooring.

The dual-stiffness structure of SmartCells fall protection products provides users with a stable standing surface that will not cause a balance impaired person to lose their balance, while at the same time providing 5-7 times more cushioning than a foam mat of the same height. In addition, SmartCells cannot absorb liquid, so infection control issues can be more effectively dealt with, too.

SmartCells Fall Protection products are available to be used as an underlayment or in a variety of colors (Black, Light Brown, and Grey) and additional configurations ranging from build-your-own mats and custom flooring to pre-sized mats (2×3, 3×5 and 24×68).

Jump Into Plyometrics with These 9 Exercises

We’re so close we can almost smell the ocean spray and feel the sand between our toes. That’s right, beach season is just around the corner. To help you prepare for the beach, and feel your best, we have gathered several plyometric exercises ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert. As always, if you haven’t exercised in a while or are new to plyometrics, you will want to take it slow and may want to consult a doctor before you start an exercise routine.

Beginner Exercises

  1. Squat Jumps- Space your legs shoulder length apart, squat as low as you can then jump as high as you can. As soon as you land, squat and jump again. Repeat this for 3 sets of 12 squat jumps each.
  2. Power Skip- This exercise is just like regular skipping. However, you do it much faster and lift your knee as high as you can.
  3. Box Jumps- For this exercise, you will need a tall sturdy box or a platform such as a bench or tall step. Stand in front of it, jump onto the box and immediately off of it. As you get stronger, increase the height of the box.

Intermediate Exercises

  1. Speed Skater Hops- This exercise is similar to side-to-side hops, however, the jumper must land on only one leg, similar to how speed skaters move as they skate.
  2. Overhead Slam- Using a medicine ball, raise it over your head then throw it to the ground as hard as you can. Catch the ball and repeat. This will work your lats.
  3. Knee Tuck Jump- In a standing position, squat as low as you can then jump as high as you can. When in the air, bring your knees as close to your chin as you can. Repeat this for 3 sets of 12 as fast as you can.

Expert Exercises

  1. Alternating Lunge Jumps- In this exercise you will start by going into a lunge and as you rise, you will jump and land with the opposite leg in front and continue down into a lunge, then repeat.
  2. Death Drop Jumps- This exercise is the opposite of box jumps. Start by standing on a box. Step off, when your feet touch the ground instantly absorb the drop and jump as high as you can vertically.
  3. Side to Side Box Jump- With a box on your side, jump up and over the box with your right foot on the box and your left on the floor. Continue jumping side-to-side.

Whatever exercise you choose, SmartCells Personal Training mats and flooring can reduce impact stress on joints by up to 90% while at the same providing a safe, stable surface for workouts.

Available in three different colors (Black, Light Brown, and Grey) as well as three different sizes (36”X60”, 52”X60”, 52”X88”), the remarkable SmartCells Personal Training mats are low profile (1/2”) and have molded-in beveled edges. 5 Ways to Jumpstart Your Plyometric Routine

Whether you’re trying to shed a little extra weight to get ready for Summer, or you’re simply exercising to reduce stress and increase energy, this sunny Spring weather certainly makes it a lot easier.

Having the ability to exercise outside, in your house or at the gym opens up a lot of options to shake up your workout routine. You could go for a jog, lift weights, take a yoga class, go for a hike or bike ride, the options are endless and all it depends on is what your exercise goals are.

If your exercise goals are to lose weight while increasing strength and cardiovascular fitness, then plyometric exercises will provide you with one of the best outcomes. These high-intensity workouts focus on speed, agility/balance and power and can be done anywhere: your home, the gym or outside.

The History

Originally conceived in the Cold War era by Soviet Union Scientists, plyometrics, or Jump Training as it was called back then, was developed to increase the speed and explosiveness of Russian track and field athletes. The plyometric training paid off and for several years the Russian athletes were a step ahead of the competition, literally and figuratively. Today, sports teams across the United States and World use plyometric exercises as a way to train their athletes.

How It Works

As you may have guessed, the short bursts of high intensity plyometric exercises have several physical and mental benefits. Not only do the exercises increase the strength and endurance of muscles and tendons, they also increase cardiovascular and nervous system health. This is due to the fact that every time your muscles contract, a signal is sent to your brain. As you increase your plyometric abilities, your brain becomes faster and more efficient at firing these signals.

Getting Started

A plyometric exercise routine can be very beneficial to your overall health and wellness goals. However, like any workout routine, it is important to learn the proper technique to prevent injury and maximize results.

These five tips will help you jumpstart your plyometric routine and ensure your health and safety in the process:

  1. Build Your Foundation- If you haven’t exercised in a while then you should hold off on starting plyometric exercise until you have a base of strength and flexibility.
  2. Start Off Slow- Once you have your foundation strength and flexibility built, then you can start adding plyometric exercises to your routine. At first you will want to focus on doing them right rather than doing them fast.
  3. Always Warm Up- Considering the high intensity of the exercises, always warm your body, tendons and muscles up before hand by doing some stretching and light cardio work such as a slow jog.
  4. Exercise Frequency- Once you have the exercise down, you should perform each exercise for 3 sets of 12 reps with a 1 minute rest between each set. Considering the intensity of plyometric exercises, experts recommend doing them no more than 3 times a week with at least 1 day of rest between each plyometric workout.
  5. Use SmartCells Personal Training Products

SmartCells Personal Training products can reduce impact stress on joints by up to 90% while at the same providing a safe, stable surface for workouts.

Available in three different colors (Black, Light Brown, and Grey) as well as three different sizes (36”X60”, 52”X60”, 52”X88”), the remarkable SmartCells Personal Training mats are low profile (1/2”) and have molded-in beveled edges. For custom applications, SATECH offers custom-sized mats as well as a wall-to-wall flooring option that is perfect for in-home gyms, and aerobics flooring.

Your Mother Called… She Doesn’t Want Flowers This Year.

No one has known you longer, loved you deeper and put up with as much as your Mother has with you. Not even your Dad. Which is why many countries worldwide set aside one day each year to focus on moms. This year in the United States, Mother’s day is being celebrated on Sunday May 14.

Let’s face it, from the very beginning our mothers get stuck with some pretty challenging jobs. As if carrying a baby for 9 months isn’t enough, mothers are plagued with short nights of sleep, poopy diapers, temper tantrums and constantly worrying if we are safe and being raised right.

In fact, during our diaper years, our mothers change an average of 7,200 diapers. The work doesn’t stop there though, during our pre-school years we require attention once every 4 minutes or roughly 210 times each day. Furthermore, each year our moms wash approximately 330 loads of laundry for us, which totals nearly 5,300 articles of clothing each year.

Considering everything we put our moms through, we think she deserves more than a card and flowers this year. She deserves the gift of comfort, peace and complete relaxation. She deserves SmartCells.

SmartCells cushioning technology is available in three different product lines (Anti-Fatigue, Fall Protection and Personal Training) to best suit the needs of your mother.

SmartCells Anti-Fatigue

For the mom who spends extended periods of time on her feet we suggest the SmartCells line of anti-fatigue mats, insoles and flooring.

SmartCells anti-fatigue mats are built with industrial quality and combine features such as beveled edges and stability with style and elegance that blends perfectly in any room in the house.

The unique SmartCells act like springs that cushion as weight is applied, then rebound when the weight shifts, which returns energy and reduces fatigue.

The SmartCells line of anti-fatigue mats come with an industry-leading 8-year warranty and are available in three different surface options (smooth, basket weave and carpet top) as well as three colors (Black, gray and light brown) and three sizes (2X3, 3X5 and 24X68).

If you are simply too mobile to enjoy the benefits of a SmartCells anti-fatigue mats, we also have a line of SmartCells insoles.

SmartCells Fall Protection

SmartCells fall protection mats and flooring are the perfect gift for the mom who wishes to age-in-place and maintain safe independence.

SmartCells fall injury prevention products provides users with a stable standing surface that will not cause a balance impaired person to lose their balance, while at the same time providing 5-7 times more cushioning than a foam mat of the same height. In addition, SmartCells cannot absorb liquid, so infection control issues can be more effectively dealt with.

SmartCells Fall Protection products are available to be used as an underlayment or in a variety of colors (Black, Light Brown, and Grey) and additional configurations ranging from build-your-own mats and custom flooring to pre-sized mats (2×3, 3×5 and 24×68).

SmartCells Personal Training

SmartCells Personal Training products are the perfect gift for the mom who loves to stay active, and wants to stay comfortable and feeling good in the process.

SmartCells Personal Training products can reduce impact stress on joints by up to 90% while at the same providing a safe, stable surface for workouts.

Celebrate Earth Day with 7 Earth-Friendly Every Day Activities

For half a century, the 22nd of April has been internationally known and celebrated as Earth Day. This day commemorates the anniversary and birth of the modern Environmental Movement which began in 1970. Even though Earth Day is one day a year, we believe that environmental responsibility should take place daily. To start that conversation, this article includes 7 easy ways you can be environmentally responsible in your community.

The Back Story

After seeing the devastation caused by an oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara, CA, Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, was inspired to raise awareness of its environmental impact. His idea was to launch a national “Teach-In on the Environment.” This quickly gained traction and on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans attended rallies nationwide protesting the deterioration of the environment. Today, Earth Day is celebrated by more than 1 billion people worldwide in more than 192 countries, and is now officially the largest secular observance in the world.

The Statistics and Facts

Although we have come a long way in reducing the destruction of the ozone layer and being more environmentally conscious these fast stats may have you feeling like we still have a long way to go:

  • Less than 50% of Adults claim they always keep unneeded lights off.
  • 58% of Adults do not recycle.
  • The average American produces 1600 pounds of garbage each year, and less than 1 in 3 adults claim to reuse items instead of throwing them away.
  • Each American uses 80-100 gallons of water each day and 30% of Americans claim to always make an effort to use less water.
  • Over a 5-year study it was found that marine debris increased by 5% each year.

How Can You Help

Now that you have seen the facts, you may be wondering how you can help. The following are steps you can take in your very own home and community that will make a positive difference for the environment.

Limit Car Time
Although emissions testing has become more stringent, cars are still one of the largest sources of air pollution. While driving a hybrid will certainly help, it is also encouraged to use public transportation or carpool whenever possible to help lower the amount of cars on the road. Using a bicycle to travel is the most environmentally friendly option and is also a great way to stay in shape.

Get Rid of Paper Bills
Many companies now have the option to receive and pay bills through the internet. This not only makes your life more convenient, it helps reduce the amount of wasted paper, postage and checks.

Volunteer or Join a Local Environmental Group
If you don’t have the money to donate, a donation of your time is often seen as just as valuable, if not even more valuable. Many local groups host community cleanup and planting events.

Plant a Tree or Bush
Shrubbery is not only visually appealing, trees and bushes also help absorb CO2 in the air and offset the effects of pollution. Just be mindful to choose an option that doesn’t require too much water.

Change Your Light Bulbs
Many companies are now offering energy efficient light bulbs that are just as bright as the old ones. Not only will you be helping the environment, your electric bill will be thanking you as well.

Recycle and Reuse
As mentioned earlier, the average American produces a lot of trash. A good way to minimize your trash is to recycle cardboard and glass, reuse items rather than tossing them for new ones, and utilizing a compost bin for all of your compostable garbage. With the rising popularity of Pinterest, there are also a ton of ways to up-cycle your belongings.

Make it a Habit
As we mentioned at the beginning of this blog, being environmentally conscious is not something that should be done merely one day a year. If you do it long enough, being environmentally conscious will become second nature to you, and future generations will be forever grateful.

Stand with SmartCells. United we can make a difference.

Stress Relief in Six Easy Steps

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” -Benjamin Franklin

If you’re reading this blog it means you survived yet another tax season. For many, taxes and stress go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Everything about the tax process is stressful, from gathering W-2s, W-9s and every other tax document to properly itemizing and deducting purchases, which is why April is also National Stress Awareness month.

Since its inception in 1992, each year during the month of April, health care professionals across the country join forces to raise awareness of stress, its side effects and how to minimize stress in your life.

No matter how old or young you are, chances are you have experienced stress at one point in your life or another. In fact, according to statistics, 77% of Americans regularly experience stress-related symptoms.
