Study: Standing and very slow walking: foot pain-pressure threshold, subjective pain experience and work activity.

Abstract: Prolonged standing is described as uncomfortable by exposed workers, but the discomfort has not been linked to precise descriptions of workplace activity. We observed 10 sales and kitchen workers ("group 1") who worked standing. We compared the plantar pain-pressure threshold (PPT) of "group 1" (10 standing workers) to that of "group 2" (11 researchers who could choose their posture freely).

Study: A comparison of the effects of floor mats and shoe in-soles on standing fatigue.

In assembly line positions and other occupations, employees experience pain and discomfort associated with long periods of standing. Modifying flooring is a common intervention method used to alleviate problems associated with constrained standing. This study investigated the effects of four different standing conditions upon assembly workers' perception of general fatigue and discomfort associated with various body parts following 1 week of 8-h days of exposure to each condition.

Study: Effects of local fatigue of the lower limbs on postural control and postural stability in standing posture.

Postural stability and postural control were studied before and after a fatigue protocol of soleus muscles. Postural stability was assessed by the centre of gravity motion, which was computed from the motion of the centre of pressure, evaluating the postural control. Ten healthy male subjects were asked to stand as still as possible with eyes open before and after the fatigue protocol, performed in a sitting position.

Study: Strength capabilities and subjective limits in repetitive manual exertions: task and hand dominance effects.

Abstract: Strength and subjectively determined exertion limits are used widely for ergonomic evaluation. Although compilations of such data for the hand and finger exist, several important limitations include the use of inexperienced participants and constrained postures. In this study both strength and maximum acceptable limits (MAL, 2-hour duration) were obtained from both industrial workers and inexperienced volunteers in 10 simulated hand-intensive automotive assembly tasks.
